You are only controlling a single OS and single desktop, across two machines, without affecting input into machine #2's OS and applications at all.

ScreenRecycler is for using a second computer as an extended desktop of the first computer - completely different, and more like adding an external monitor. Synergy is for using one computer to control multiple computers. That will not solve the problem as far as I know. It shares mouse, keyboard and clipboard input over multiple computers. One other option you might want to consider using is Synergy ( I was also advised to 'disable compression and degradation' as well as the screen colours to thousands. Or can i just cable the two computers together? and if so, where do i confirm that they should connect via the ethernet cable?

would i need to plug the ethernet into the internet router as well?

I am not noticing any visible difference with the ethernet cable really, but i am also unsure how to tell the software to use a connection via ethernet cable, rather than a wireless one. i also have an old ethernet cable that i have just connected between the two machines.

I noticed while i was trying it that there are visible delays if you take video windows onto the remote screen (on the iMac), and redraw lags whilst using CAD.įirst i tried the setup just wirelessly, and changed screen colours to thousands (as recommended by ScreenRecycler). I would like to use it for video editing and CAD so need fairly seamless graphics. I am connecting a MBP (new version) with an old iMac (intel core duo 1.83GHz 10.4.11) to enable screen sharing and use the iMac as an extended screen for my MBP.

You have to arrange your virtual screens in Transport in such a way that they don’t share the same borders. (I can even make the iMac the MacBook’s main display!) Using the power of Spaces, I can even have multiple workspaces, and keep (for example) Mail and iChat permanently displayed in the MacBook screen, no matter what workspace I’m in.Ī caveat: Transport doesn’t seem to recognize the ScreenRecycler display, at least when one machine is Panther (iMac) and the other Leopard (MacBook).

The monitor of the computer your VNC client runs on looks to OS X like just another monitor, plugged in through the mini-DVI port. ScreenRecycler turns your VNC client into an attached display. The same guy who makes this excellent VNC client also makes ScreenRecycler. But that only gives me the keyboard and mouse and a 1280×800 window mirroring the MacBook screen. So I could turn that on and then use a VNC client on my iMac. Using the smaller keyboard and mouse isn’t so nice either.

But what I don’t like about it is that the screen is a bit smaller than my iMac (1200×800). What I especially like about it is that it has a big screen (1680×1050).
